Hey everyone, I just saw something weird on social media. A famous tech CEO posted about some kind of lottery thing in Wisconsin, offering $1 million. It sounded like it was related to voting or elections somehow. But then the post disappeared really fast. Did anyone else catch this? What do you think it was all about? It seemed pretty sketchy to me. I’m wondering if he realized it might not be legal or something. Does anyone know if there are rules against stuff like that for elections? I’m super curious to hear what you all think about this!
I can confirm that the tweet in question did indeed exist briefly. From what I gathered, the tech mogul proposed a $1 million lottery for wisconsin voters, ostensibly to boost turnout. However, such incentives tied to voting are generally prohibited under US election laws. The swift deletion suggests legal advisors likely warned of potential ramifications. While increasing civic engagement is admirable, this approach treads dangerously close to vote buying territory. It’s a complex issue that highlights the fine line between encouraging participation and unduly influencing the democratic process. Perhaps more conventional get-out-the-vote efforts would be more appropriate and less contentious.
omg i saw that too! it was up for like 2 seconds b4 it vanished. suuuper shady if u ask me. probably illegal to bribe ppl to vote or smthn. these tech billionaires think they can do whatever they want smh. glad someone else noticed, thought i was going crazy lol
Wow, crazy stuff! I totally missed that tweet, but it sounds like it was pretty wild. Offering money to get people to vote? Yeahhh that’s definitely in a gray area legally speaking. No wonder it disappeared so fast!
I’m not surprised a tech billionaire would try something like that though. They always think they can just throw money at everything to fix it. But messing with elections is a whole other level.
Gotta say though, part of me kinda wishes I could’ve entered that lottery lol. A million bucks would be sweet! But nah, probably better it got taken down. We don’t need rich folks trying to buy votes, even if that wasn’t the intention.
Anyone know if there’s been any fallout from this? Like, is the CEO getting investigated or anything? Or did they just pretend it never happened?
