Poker pro from Japan discovers dining companion was healthcare CEO shooting suspect

Hey everyone, I just heard the craziest story and wanted to share it here. A Japanese poker player named Obara Jun had a random encounter at a restaurant a few months ago. He chatted with some American guy he didn’t know. Now he’s found out that the guy was actually Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the United Healthcare CEO shooting! Can you believe it? It’s wild how you never know who you might meet when you’re out and about. Has anyone else ever had an unexpected run-in with someone who turned out to be infamous? I’m curious to hear your stories!

wow thats crazy! i met a guy at a bar once who turned out to be a wanted fugitive. didnt know til i saw his face on the news next day. scary to think how close we can get to dangerous ppl without realizing it. stay safe out there folks!

Omg, that’s such a wild story! :open_mouth: I can’t even imagine how freaky it must’ve been for that poker player to realize who he’d been chatting with. Talk about a small world, right?

I’ve never met anyone infamous (thank goodness!), but I did have a pretty random encounter once. I was grabbing coffee at this tiny café and ended up sitting next to this super friendly older guy. We got to talking, and it turns out he was a retired astronaut who’d been on one of the Apollo missions! Didn’t believe him at first, but he showed me some pics on his phone. Not quite as dramatic as your story, but it definitely made me realize you never know who you might bump into.

Anyone else have any cool ‘brush with fame’ stories? Or maybe some not-so-cool ones like the OP’s? This stuff always fascinates me!

That’s quite a startling encounter for the poker player! it’s a sobering reminder of how we can unknowingly cross paths with individuals involved in serious crimes. while i haven’t met anyone infamous, I once sat next to a person on a flight who turned out to be a high-ranking government official. We had a fascinating conversation about international relations, and I only realized who they were when I saw them on the news a few weeks later. It certainly made me more aware of the potential significance of casual interactions. These experiences underscore the importance of being observant and cautious in our daily lives, as we never truly know the full story behind the strangers we meet.
