ELI5: Why do lotteries typically select just one or a few winners instead of many?

I have always been curious about why popular lottery games, such as those resembling PowerBall or Mega Millions, are designed to produce only a single huge winner or a handful of winners. Wouldn’t it be more beneficial if the odds were adjusted so that, for example, a thousand participants could each take home a prize of $100,000 rather than having one person win an enormous jackpot? What is the reasoning behind this approach in lottery design?

i think they wanna create that huge, rare win make the hype real. fewer winners means a huge jackpot which draws in more folks, even if it means the tiny prize idea is tossed out.
